Mr. Luxury Ski
Breckenridge's third-annual Women's Ski Week launches this week with a line-up of programs and lessons designed to empower and support women and girls whether they are new to skiing or seasoned schussers.
"Women's Ski Week is such an amazing event! It's so great to get out there with like minded women and push your boundaries," says Breckenridge Pro Team Skier Keri Herman. "Its so inspiring to see women killing it and pushes me to be a better skier."
Herman is one of a three female leaders who will be discussing the present and future of women in skiing and outdoor adventure during Women's Ski Week's inaugural Fireside Forum on Thursday, February 16.
Her path to from Midwestern hockey star to freeski Olympian offers a unique perspective on getting more women on the slopes. After moving to Colorado at age 21, Herman learned to ski at Breck and fell in love. "I was one of the few women in the park at that time, so I looked up to any girl that was out there," she says. "I remember watching Lisa Soleberg and Jess Cummings rip around and thinking they were so awesome."
One of the week's most exciting opportunities for brand-new skiers is the Ski Girls Rock clinics for girls ages 7 to 14. Vail Resorts teamed with Olympic gold medalist and World Alpine ski champion Lindsey Vonn to develop this lesson limited to groups of four. Taught by Breck's top female pros, the goal isn't just improving on-snow skills; Vonn worked with instructors to develop lessons that also empower girls and build confidence on and off the slopes.
Ladies looking to take their skiing to the next level should check out the three-day Women’s Ski Camp. Breck's squad of female instructors create a supportive environment that allows women of all abilities and ages improve their ski skills and develop confidence to carve the entire mountain. In addition to top-level instruction, campers are invited to apres ski forums discussing the latest women-specific ski equipment.
His Y chromosome aside, Mr. Luxury Ski is looking forward to insights from that Fireside Forum. In addition to Herman, participants include Amelia Earhart, 9News Denver reporter, pilot, and adventurer, and Laurie Tewksbury, C.O.O. of nonprofit Outdoor Women’s Alliance.
The bottom line is Breckenridge is a great place to learn to ski, Herman says. Her can't miss run? Claim Jumper between Peak 7 and 8. "Its a blue cruiser with a bunch of rollers and is so much fun!"
