Mr. Luxury Ski
Colorado’s legendary Ski Train connecting Denver and Winter Park Resort is back on the tracks.
This December Amtrak’s new Winter Park Express will restore train service between Denver’s Union Station and the snowy ski resort after a seven-year hiatus. Round-trip trains will run Saturdays and Sundays, with an additional round-trip on Martin Luther King Day and Presidents Day
The Ski Train previously ran from 1940 to 2009, but was discontinued when it became too costly for a private operator to run. Amtrak decided to restore service after a series of 2015 test runs sold out in minutes.
The two-hour ride is a scenic chug up a canyon and through the Moffat Tunnel, and it's easily one of the most beautiful routes the company operates, Amtrak Executive Vice President Matt Hardison said.
But getting the Denver’s Ski Train back on the tracks required more than sufficient demand. Some $3.5 million in required improvements were paid for by private-public partnerships involving Winter Park Resort, Amtrak, Union Pacific, Colorado Department of Transportation, Denver, and non-profit rail advocates. The most notable improvement is a new ADA-compliant train platform at Winter Park, a resort that is home to the National Sports Center for the Disabled.
“This is the culmination of a long but rewarding process and we couldn’t be more excited to have passenger rail service return to the doorstep of Winter Park Resort,” said Gary DeFrange, Winter Park Resort President. “We know there’s incredible demand for a viable transportation alternative to I-70 and we’re deeply appreciative to Amtrak, Union Pacific, CDOT, City of Denver, and the Town of Winter Park for helping to make this long-standing dream a reality.”
Adult tickets are as low as $39 each way and go on sale on at 8:00 a.m. MST on Tuesday, Aug. 30 exclusively through Amtrak. The 500+ passenger Winter Park Express trains will depart Union Station at 7:00 a.m. and arrive at the resort at approximately 9:00 a.m.; trains will depart the resort at 4:30 p.m. arriving in Denver around 6 p.m. Reservations must be made and tickets purchased by 11:59 p.m. the day before departure. Two children ages 2-12 can ride for half-fare with each ticketed adult.
